Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.
During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, a young researcher considered a political dissident is employed in a secret military radio station, given her unique knowledge in astrophysics. Forty years later, an expert in nanomaterials, having found himself embroiled in national security issues, notices a mysterious countdown timer that keeps appearing to him in increasingly inexplicable ways. In his search for the truth, he will come across a virtual reality game called “Three Body”.

After completing what is widely considered as one of the greatest television series of all times with ‘Game of Thrones’, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss teamed up with Alexander Woo and moved on to their next gamble on a seemingly un-adaptable book series with the ‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ Trilogy- and it seems like that gamble payed off, at least artistically.Already in the early episodes you can tell this is one of the most ambitious, most deep and philosophical Science-Fiction stories yet to be produced on television, and I can definitely see what all the early hype was about. The source material for itself is said to be fascinating but simultaneously very challenging to adapt to the visual medium, with some elements (also in the first book/season but mostly in the latter ones) that are hyped to be almost impossible to put to screen. Netflix put a huge amount of money on this franchise during a bidding war years ago, and once Benioff & Weiss signed their overall deal with them it was a perfect opportunity to try and build a household-name Sci-Fi franchise for Netflix with this show- and I surely hope it will ultimately receive the success it deserves.
